Want to give your ensemble a piece of music that’s totally different to everything else they do?
Feel like playing something to get your hips moving?
Then this reggae blues will be perfect for you!
This piece is scored for 9 players, featuring a couple of mallet instruments, floor toms, a snare drummer, and wonderful auxillary percussion instruments. A bass player also gets to jump on board and groove away in true reggae style! Have a listen to the minimalist opening, and as the chilled-out-yet-dancy feeling sets in, the vibraphone player starts to strut their stuff:

The beauty of having 9 players on a tune such as this is that there are so many colours to work with. One moment it’s really quiet, the next everyone is playing together to build excitement and volume. But to stay true to the style, most parts all contain a great deal of space, all intertwining with each other.

The tune then takes a turn jazzwards as the tuned and untuned instruments ‘trade fours’. This means that the mallets feature for four bars, then the the other percussionists have a four bars of complete attention, before once going back to the vibraphone and marimba. This exchange happens several times before eventually going back to the original melody.

This piece finishes differently to many percussion ensemble tunes. Instead of building up and getting bigger and bigger for a grand finale, ‘Reggae For Me, Reggae For You’ comes down in volume towards the end. This will challenge your students, as even the shaker player must project their full energy and intensity into the instrument, but at a whisper quiet level!

Your ensemble with LOVE this piece. The mallets players get a chance to be showcased, the floor tom drummers get to whack the skins, and the snare player can experiment with all the different timbres of the drum. It’s groovy and different, and you can play them a track or 2 of Bob Marley to get them in the mood!
